What Would The World Look Like If Colonialism Never Happened?

Regular price $20.00 $0.00
With the gun and sword Western colonizers brought organized religion, sexism, genocide, and chattel slavery. No, the world was not a perfect place before Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Hispanola (the Dominican Republic and Haiti today).

But consider this: The Arawak (Taino) natives who inhabited that land treated women equally and had a matrilineal society. All genders participated in government and the organization of their society at all levels. Polygamy and monogamy was normal. Abortions were accepted, women chose their partners, and when they wanted to have sex. There was no homelessness or poverty because people shared their homes, belongings, and resources. The idea of private poverty was preposterous.

When the conquistadors arrived the autonomy of the women was so alien to them, they called them "macho women." They took the Taino by force, raped them, and kept them as "concubines."

No, the Taino society was not perfect, but consider how much we could have learned from them if their existence, customs, and way of life wasn't exterminated so that Spain could have a few more ships for the Armada and the British could have cheap cotton, tobacco and tea.

I pose this question as a reminder that so much of the awfulness we take for granted wasn't always this way. Things can be different because they once were.
